A BA can double as preparation for Kerala PSC degree-level exams if you pick the right main subject. Here is how the subjects overlap with the syllabus, and the one rule to check first.

By GetMyDegree Academic Team•Updated: 5 November 2026

For most Kerala PSC aspirants, a distance BA in History, Political Science or Economics gives the most overlap with the degree-level preliminary syllabus, with English or Malayalam a close second for the language papers. A recognized distance BA generally meets a "graduation" eligibility condition. The exception is a post whose Special Rules or notification ask for a degree through a regular course of study, and you should check that before you choose the mode, not after.

That is the short answer. The rest of this article explains how the subjects line up with what PSC actually tests, and why the choice of main subject matters less than people think once you are past eligibility.

What a BA does for a PSC aspirant

A degree does two separate jobs for a PSC candidate, and it helps to keep them apart.

  • It makes you eligible. Many posts in the degree-level stream, and almost every post above it, require a bachelor's degree. Without one you cannot apply, however well you prepare.

  • It can make you better prepared. Three years of reading in a subject that also appears in the exam is three years of revision you would have done anyway.

The first job is the one that matters most, and any recognized BA does it for posts that ask only for graduation. The second job is where the choice of subject comes in.

How the degree-level prelims syllabus is shaped

In general terms, Kerala PSC's degree-level preliminary examination draws from a broad general studies base: history (Kerala, India and the world), geography, economics, the Indian Constitution and civics, basic science, current affairs, arts, culture and sports, simple arithmetic and mental ability, and the English and regional language papers. The exact topic list and weightage are published by the Commission and can change, so read the current syllabus on the Kerala PSC website rather than relying on a coaching summary.

What matters for subject choice is that the humanities and social sciences make up a large share of that list. A BA in one of those areas sits directly on top of it.

The subjects, and how they overlap

Which main subjects are available in distance or online mode depends on the university and on its DEB entitlement for your admission year, so ask before assuming a particular combination exists. With that caveat, here is how the common BA subjects line up.

  • History. The strongest single overlap. Indian national movement, Kerala history and the renaissance, and world history are all recurring PSC areas. A History graduate has usually read most of this in more depth than the exam needs.

  • Political Science. Directly useful for the Constitution, governance, rights and civics sections, which are reliable scorers and also matter in later stages for administrative posts.

  • Economics. Covers Indian economy, planning, budgets and banking basics, which appear both as static topics and inside current affairs questions.

  • English. Helps with the English paper and with reading speed across the whole question booklet. Less overlap with the general studies content.

  • Malayalam. Useful for the regional language section and for candidates who prefer to prepare in Malayalam. As with English, the general studies overlap is smaller.

  • Sociology. Some overlap with social issues, welfare schemes and Kerala society, though thinner than History or Political Science.

None of these covers arithmetic, mental ability or basic science. Those you prepare separately, whatever you study.

Choose for the next ten years, not only the next exam

A subject with a strong PSC overlap is a sensible default, but it is not the only consideration. If you might later want a postgraduate degree, a B.Ed, or a teaching or research route, the main subject of your BA decides which doors open. History or Economics leads to more PG options than people expect; English and Malayalam lead naturally to teaching and language posts.

Also choose a subject you can actually sit through for three years. A BA you abandon in the second year helps with neither eligibility nor preparation. If your interest is in commerce or computing rather than humanities, compare the BA with other routes; a B.Com through distance mode is just as valid for posts that ask only for a degree.

The regular-course caveat

In January 2026, in Kerala Public Service Commission v. Vaisakh C.L. (2026:KER:6103), the Kerala High Court held that a library science qualification earned through distance education did not satisfy the requirement for Librarian Grade IV, because the notification and the Special Rules required a regular course of study. An equivalency certificate from a university did not cure that.

This does not mean distance degrees are invalid for Kerala PSC. Under the UGC's 2020 regulations, a degree from a recognized university, in a programme with DEB entitlement for your year, is equivalent to a conventional degree, and that is what most notifications rely on when they ask for "a degree from a recognized university". It means that for any post where the rules add the words "regular course" or "regular study", distance mode will not satisfy the condition. We explain the ruling and how to read a notification in more detail in is a distance degree valid for Kerala PSC.

Making the degree and the preparation work together

The aspirants who use a BA well tend to do a few things deliberately.

  • Pick the target post category early and download a past notification for it. Check the qualification clause before you enrol.

  • Read the degree textbooks with the PSC syllabus open beside them. Mark the chapters that appear in both and give those extra attention.

  • Keep a single set of notes for both purposes. Rewriting the same history twice, once for the university and once for PSC, wastes months.

  • Use the university's examination calendar to plan your PSC exam dates around it, not the other way round. The two rarely collide if you look at both at the start of the year.

  • Collect your provisional certificate and marksheets the moment results are out. Certificate verification happens on PSC's timeline, not yours.

If you are already working, the habits in our guide to studying while working full time apply just as well here.

What to ask before you enrol

Before you pay anything, ask the provider for the university's name, the programme title exactly as it will appear on the degree, the main subject options offered for your intake, and the DEB entitlement for that year. Verify the university and the entitlement yourself on the UGC and DEB websites. We show every student these details, with the full fee in writing, before any payment is taken, and fees can be spread across monthly instalments without interest.

If you have a specific post in mind, bring its notification to the conversation. We will read the qualification clause with you and tell you plainly whether a distance BA fits it.
